Steve attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he served in Campus Crusade for Christ and was vice president of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He was a member of the Army Reserve and National Guard for 25 years, attaining the rank of Major. Steve graduated from Hattiesburg High in 1978, where he was quarterback of the football team, and was awarded the D.I.
